Palestinians in the Gaza Strip on Thursday joined in a pause to mark the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People.
The stand, organized in front of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) headquarters in western Gaza, was called by the Council on International Relations - Palestine (non-governmental). Participants held placards reading "Free Palestine" and "International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People". Some of the participants also painted a mural of children and young men holding Palestinian flags. The Council stressed in a statement that "the world celebration of this day requires more solidarity and support with the Palestinian people in light of the ongoing crimes of occupation." He noted that a delegation from the Council had delivered a letter to the Secretary-General of the United Nations through the Office of the United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process. On 29 November each year, the United Nations celebrates the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. This date was chosen, in 1947, on the anniversary of the UN resolution 181, which became known as the "Partition Resolution." It stated that a "Jewish state" and an "Arab state" would be established in Palestine, with Jerusalem as an entity. Distinct subject to a special international regime.
