A man who aided and encouraged his wife to commit suicide was sentenced to 10 years in prison by an Australian court in a legal case believed to be the first of its kind in the world.
The Australian judiciary noted that Graham Murant had paid his wife, Jennifer Murant, for suicide, for the financial benefits of health insurance for her life.
Indeed, by 2014, the husband succeeded in persuading Jennifer to eventually kill herself, earning a sum of $1.4 million.
Although the wife suffered from depression and anxiety, her doctors confirmed that her condition was viable, which raised additional doubts about her sudden death.
The body of Jennifer was found by Australian police in 2014 near an electric generator, while investigators confirmed that Graham was the one who took Jennifer to buy the generator, as he was fully aware that the wife would use it for the suicide.
In a related context, the Supreme Court of the Australian District of Queensland confirmed that it was the first time that a person who had mentioned his wife had been convicted of suicide and helped her to do so.
