The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) has confirmed that the humanitarian aid currently entering the Gaza Strip is far from sufficient to meet the needs of the population, given the catastrophic humanitarian situation they are enduring.
In a press statement, UNRWA explained that 900 trucks carrying aid entered the region over the past two weeks, which represents just over 10% of the daily needs of Gaza’s population, who are suffering from a severe blockade and continuous bombardment.
The statement also noted that during a ceasefire earlier this year, when bureaucratic and security restrictions were eased through political will, the United Nations was able to bring between 600 and 800 trucks daily without any reports of aid misuse, helping to avoid a humanitarian disaster.
UNRWA stressed that the current situation, marked by collective starvation and aid shortages, could be changed if there were political will to allow humanitarian organizations, including UNRWA and its partners, to carry out their work freely and efficiently.
The agency concluded its statement by urging the international community to fulfill its humanitarian responsibilities, calling for further facilitation of aid entry to ensure the needs of the population are met and their human dignity is preserved.
