Some 29 million Polish voters are heading to the polls on Sunday to vote in a runoff election to elect a new president to succeed Andrzej Duda.
According to the official Polish News Agency, the final two candidates are Rafal Trzaskowski, the mayor of Warsaw, who received 31 percent of the vote in the first round, and Karol Nawrocki, the conservative historian, who came in second with 29 percent of the vote. Recent polls indicate a close race between the two candidates in support.
The first round of elections took place on May 18, with broad voter participation, with ten candidates competing.
In Poland, the president serves a five-year term and has broad powers, including representing the country abroad, shaping foreign policy, appointing the prime minister and ministers, and acting as commander-in-chief of the armed forces in the event of war.
