French diplomatic source: G7 leaders authorized Macron to reach out to Iran to ease tensions

Leaders of the Group of Seven industrialized nations have authorized French President Emmanuel Macron to reach out to Iran in a bid to ease tensions, a French diplomatic source said on Monday.

As the group's current chairman, Macron will convey to Iran two goals agreed by the group's leaders: the intention to prevent Iran "at all costs" from acquiring a nuclear weapon, and to seek a path of dialogue to end rising tensions in the region and avoid being drawn into an armed conflict.

According to the source, the move follows talks Macron has held in recent weeks with the authorities in both the United States and Iran.

Tensions have risen sharply in recent months as the United States continues its "maximum pressure" policy on Iran after Washington withdrew from Iran's nuclear deal last year.
