Report: Attacks against media freedoms on the rise in Palestine

The month of October witnessed an increase in the number of violations against media freedoms in Palestine, according to the statement

The monthly report issued by Mada Center and which included the attacks it monitored for the past month. The center documented a total of (28) attacks compared to a total of (16) attacks recorded during the month of September, an increase of 75% over the violations of the previous month.

The attacks perpetrated by social media companies, specifically Facebook, ranked second in number after the Israeli attacks, which posed the greatest quantitative and qualitative danger among all the attacks that occurred during this month. The extent of (3) violations committed by Palestinian parties in the Gaza Strip was documented, while no Any violation by Palestinian parties during the month of September.

Israeli violations:

During the month of October 2021, the Israeli occupation committed a total of (19) violations of the total violations recorded against media freedoms in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, which amounted to (28), and the attacks this month affected a total of 14 journalists, including two female journalists, while some of them were attacked vehicle. Israeli violations accounted for 68%.

The Israeli attacks included the physical assault of (3) journalists while performing their work, namely: Ahmed Abu Sobeih and Nasreen Al-Abed, who were severely beaten before they were arrested. Journalist Mohammed Al-Khatib, who was targeted with tear gas bombs twice, was also attacked by a third bomb while covering one event. .

The occupation forces imposed a fine on the photojournalist, Ahmed Abu Sobeih, in addition to deporting him from the Bab Al-Amoud area before his release, and detained the photojournalist, Nisreen Al-Abed, and removed her from the Bab Al-Amoud area for 15 days. He was released, and the occupation forces arrested journalist Musab Qafisha. The occupation forces prevented journalists Wahbi Makiya and Abdel Rahman Alami from covering an event in the Yusufiya cemetery in occupied Jerusalem, while the occupation intelligence summoned journalist Alaa Al-Rimawi for an interview in Ofer Detention Center.

Palestinian violations:

The number of Palestinian violations increased from zero during the month of September to (3) violations during the month of October, represented by the arrest of journalist Alaa Al-Mashrawi, a raid on his house and the confiscation of equipment from him by the Internal Security Agency in the Gaza Strip.

Facebook violations:

The management of Facebook company committed (6) violations against Palestinian media pages and their directors of journalists during October, and these violations were represented by restricting and deleting the content of these pages, which is the Qalandia media page and the “Share the Quds Network” page, which was established by the Quds Media Network in anticipation of closing its main page, and it was also restricted and deleted Content for the personal pages of the administrators in charge of managing these pages: journalists Hamza Al-Shobaki, Abdel-Raouf Shehadeh, Abdel-Qader Akl, and journalist Aseel Eid.
