More than 29 million children were born last year in conflict-affected areas around the world, according to the United Nations Children´s Fund (UNICEF).
More than one in five children born in 2018 in the world came to life in countries experiencing armed conflict, such as Afghanistan, Somalia, South Sudan, Syria, and Yemen, according to a statement issued by the international organization. He explained that these children have opened their eyes to life in general in a very tense and insecure environment, and in societies affected by the chaos of conflicts. "Negative events and long-term or recurrent trauma can lead to toxic stress in young children. This situation can have lasting negative consequences in terms of children´s learning, behavior and physical and mental development." "Violent conflicts in countries around the world are seriously restricting access to basic services for parents and their children," said UNICEF Director Henrietta Fore. "Millions of families have no access to nutritious food, safe water or health services or are deprived of a safe and healthy environment to grow and connect." "Ultimately, these families need peace, but until then they need more support to deal with the devastation these families and their children are facing."
