The UN has overwhelmingly adopted a resolution on the status of Palestinian women, in which the Israeli occupation is seen as a major obstacle to women in occupied Palestine and not only impedes their progress but deprives them of their most basic human rights guaranteed by international law.
The resolution, backed by the United States and Canada, and the abstention of nine countries, stressed the need to protect the Palestinian people, especially women and children, and to provide support to refugee Palestinian women under occupation.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants explained that for the first time the State of Palestine had submitted the resolution directly to the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations without passing through the United Nations Special Commission on Women, as was the case.
She pointed out that the importance of this step lies in the fact that the Council, which consists of 54 Member States, is responsible for identifying international social and economic priorities on the agenda of the United Nations and includes items dealing with the economic and social situation in a particular country, including an item on economic and social consequences Of the Israeli occupation of the occupied Palestinian territory and the rest of the occupied Arab territories.
The adoption of the Palestinian women´s decision this year under the economic and social consequences of the Israeli occupation of the Occupied Palestinian Territory and the rest of the occupied Arab territories gave more space to Member States to express their support for the decision of Palestinian women, Social and Cultural Rights as a recommendation of the Women´s Committee, which once was concerned with specific countries, but which is now addressing global issues relating to women.
The representative of the State of Palestine to the United Nations, Ambassador Riyad Mansour, thanked the delegations that voted in favor of the resolution. "Palestinian women in the refugee camp are making a better future for their children. In Gaza, under siege, she is the light of her family. , A girl in Jerusalem, who paints a horizon that can not be held by the wall. She is the judge, the student, the teacher, the journalist, the farmer, the trade unionist, the human rights defender, the lawyer, the parliamentarian, the sportsman and the peacemaker. "
He praised the legacy of the Palestinian feminist movement and its national and social struggle, which began more than a century ago and continues to this day.
The Economic and Social Council also adopted another resolution on the economic and social repercussions of the Israeli occupation on the living conditions of the Palestinian people in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and of the Arab population in the occupied Syrian Golan. This was also followed by an overwhelming majority in the past years, , While four countries abstained.
It should be noted that these two resolutions are submitted each year by the Group of 77+ China on behalf of the State of Palestine, but this year Palestine, in its capacity as Chairman of the Group, submitted the resolution.
