UN calls on Israel to end Gaza´s suffering

Un Secretary-General António Guterres on Wednesday called on Israel to "end the widespread suffering in Gaza, stop the construction of illegal settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories, and stop demolishing Palestinian homes."

This was followed on his behalf by his office chief, Maria Luisa Ribeiro Viotti, on the occasion of the Annual United Nations Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, which falls on 29 November each year, the date of the 1947 partition of Palestine. "The establishment of settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, has no legal legitimacy and constitutes a flagrant violation of international law, as stated in UN Security Council Resolution 2334," Guterres said.

Guterres reiterated his call for "Israelis, Palestinians, and all their supporters to take steps that would restore confidence in a two-state solution." According to Arab 48.

He added: "A just and lasting solution in which Jerusalem will be the capital of both states and will be achieved only through constructive negotiations by both sides in good faith, and supported by the international community."
