Teen arrested for killing black dancer in New York

A 17-year-old New Yorker was arrested and charged with the murder of a black and gay dancer, motivated by racism and homophobia, the city's mayor and police announced Saturday.

O'Shea Sibley, 28, was killed by a single stab wound to the chest on July 29 at a Brooklyn gas station.

During a news conference at the scene, New York Mayor Eric Adams and City Police Officer Joe Kinney announced "hate crime" charges against the teenager, who was arrested Friday night.

Surveillance cameras installed at the gas station where the crime took place captured most of the facts.

Last Saturday, O'Shea Sibley and other men pulled into a car at this Brooklyn gas station.

"While they were waiting to fill up their car, Sibley and the group that was with him started dancing to music from their car radio," Kenny said.

And then a "violent quarrel" broke out with other young men.
"The group started yelling at Sibley and his friends, yelling homophobic slurs at them," he added.
The attackers also made "anti-black statements asking them to stop dancing."
The confrontation lasted four minutes until Sibley was stabbed once in the chest, causing his death an hour later in hospital, according to Kenny's account.
