Switzerland resumes providing aid to UNRWA

Switzerland has resumed aid to the United Nations refugee agency (UNRWA), noting that a UN investigation has ruled out suspicions of fraud against the organization.

The Swiss authorities had cut their contributions last summer until an internal investigation shed light on accusations of mismanagement and abuse of power within the organization that was run by Pierre Krähenbühl.

The preliminary results of an investigation carried out by the United Nations and published in its conclusion in early November showed that any "fraud" or "misappropriation" by the organization´s commissioner general was excluded, but it referred to "administrative problems" that prompted Carnbull to resign.

"The office of the Secretary-General of the United Nations confirmed in a letter to Switzerland on 3 December 2019 that the investigation did not reveal any embezzlement," the Swiss Foreign Ministry said in a message to AFP.

"In view of the measures taken and the confirmation of the Secretary-General of the United Nations that no funds donated by donors have been transferred, the Directorate of Development and Cooperation decided to resume payments to UNRWA," she added.

Switzerland this year paid 25 million Swiss francs (23 million euros).
