Spain condemns Israel´s decision to build settlement units in the West Bank

Spain on Friday night condemned Israel´s ratification of the construction of some 2,200 new settlement units in the West Bank.

The Spanish foreign Ministry said in a statement that Israel´s decisions to build settlement units in recent days are a "policy that undermines the future of the Palestinian State, endangering the two-state solution."

The Spanish government called on Israel to end the construction of illegal settlement units, which are contrary to international law, the statement said.

On Thursday, Israel´s "Peace Now " movement revealed that the Government of Benjamin Netanyahu, in the past two days, had approved plans to build 2191 settlement units in the West Bank.

Security Council Resolution No. 2334, issued on December 23, December 2016, calls for an "immediate cessation of all settlement activities in the occupied Palestinian territories."

Israeli and Palestinian estimates indicate that there are some 650,000 settlers in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, residing in 164 settlements and 116 settlement outposts.

It should be noted that the Netanyahu government´s steps coincide with the announcement of early parliamentary elections in April April 2019, through which he seeks to win the votes of pro-settlement supporters, according to observers.
