Palestine participates in international wheelchair basketball championship

The wheelchair basketball team on Sunday was able to leave the Gaza Strip through the Beit Hanoun-Erez crossing in the northern Gaza Strip to represent Palestine at the Hanna Lahoud International Championship.

The tournament is scheduled to take place in Lebanon on September 24-29.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), which oversees the tournament, said in a statement that 11 players and five technical staff were hopeful of achieving results in the competition, which were now blocking the route from Gaza to Amman and then to Lebanon.

She added that five sports teams supported by the International Committee of the Red Cross are competing in this tournament: Palestine, Afghanistan, Syria, Libya and Lebanon.

 The tournament is organized by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in cooperation with the Lebanese Paralympic Committee for the second consecutive year.

She explained that he started working with teams from the Gaza Strip, which was no more than 4 in 2015, in cooperation with the Palestinian Paralympic Committee and representative bodies of persons with disabilities.

For five years, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has brought in international expert Jess Markt to train clubs on wheelchair basketball techniques and train technical staff from classifiers and referees.

Today there are 9 wheelchair basketball teams in Gaza, including 4 women´s teams, all participating in this year´s league.

The team is expected to return to Palestine at the beginning of October.
