The number of cases of corona infection in Israel exceeded the threshold of 1,000 new cases per day for the first time in four months.
Today, Saturday, the Ministry of Health announced that there were reports of 1,118 new infections within 24 hours.
This is the highest number since mid-March.
The number of daily cases in Israel exceeded ten thousand new cases per day during the height of the epidemic last January.
Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said in a meeting today, Friday, that the Delta strain is causing an increase in cases of corona around the world, "even countries where vaccinations have taken place such as Britain, the United States and Israel."
Bennett added that the current assessment means "the effectiveness of current vaccines against the delta variant is weaker than we had hoped."
He said it was clear that the problem could not be solved by vaccination alone.
The altered delta strain was first discovered in India and is considered highly contagious.
In light of the new increase in infections, Israel plans to re-impose restrictions on gatherings of more than 100 people inside a closed space, starting next Wednesday.
Once again, only those who have been vaccinated, recovered, or who have tested negative for the virus will be allowed to participate in such events.
In addition, it will become necessary to wear a mask in closed rooms.
About 62% of the country´s population of 9.3 million has already received the first vaccination against the Corona virus, and more than 56% have received the second dose as well.
