Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak said on Thursday that the Israeli public prosecutor should announce before the next elections whether he intended to indict former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, calling on the political opposition to unite to overthrow By his post.
In an interview with the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Barak said the people deserve to know before the vote on April 9 whether Netanyahu is likely to be charged with bribery.
"You can not send citizens to the polling stations without giving them details of what they will choose," said Barak, who also served as defense minister in the Netanyahu government between 2009 and 2013 and appeared in the past few months as one of his strongest critics.
According to Bloomberg, "I hope after the public prosecutor announces his decision, citizens will go to the polling stations, and with all due respect, they will bring Netanyahu back home."
Israeli police recommend that Netanyahu be charged with bribery and other crimes in three separate cases involving allegations of abuse of power.
Attorney General Avishay Mandelblit is expected to announce in the coming weeks whether he will summon Netanyahu to hear the allegations, the last step before deciding to indict him.
