Washington discusses with Israel the circumstances of the death of a Palestinian-American while he was under Israeli detention

The official spokesman for the US State Department, Ned Price, said on Wednesday afternoon, that the ministry is aware of the death of the eighty-year-old Palestinian-American, Omar Abdel-Majid Asad, after his arrest and handcuffing. The hand of the Israeli occupation authorities, Wednesday.

Price said that US officials spoke with the Assad family, but would not disclose the substance of their conversations with the family, in line with privacy protocols. Price also said that the ministry sent an inquiry to the Israeli government regarding the circumstances of Omar al-Assad's death, and that it is awaiting a response.

Palestinian-American Omar al-Assad was martyred on Wednesday morning after his arrest, as the Palestinian Ministry of Health confirmed that the occupation soldiers attacked him in the village of Jaljilia, north of Ramallah in the occupied West Bank.

The head of the Palestine Medical Complex in Ramallah, Ahmed Al-Batawi, said in a statement to the Qatari channel Al-Jazeera that Omar Abdel-Majid Asad died upon arrival at the hospital at approximately 5:30 am on Wednesday, January 12, 2022.

According to the mayor, Assad and his family members were on their way home after visiting relatives when soldiers parked their cars in the middle of the village, arrested the passengers inside and handcuffed them.

Asad's brother indicated that he is an elderly man who suffers from breathing and heart problems. “I don't understand how a man of this age can be considered dangerous. They tied his hands and pushed him. This is abuse. I have no doubt that what he went through caused his death.”

Night raids by the Israeli army are an almost daily practice in the occupied West Bank. Israel claims that such raids are necessary for intelligence purposes, but human rights groups have criticized the practice, insisting that the goal is to suppress and intimidate the Palestinian population and increase state control. Critics say the raids, like the checkpoints and the separation wall, are part of the occupation's DNA.

Upon press follow-up to the spokesperson, Price, whether this represents one of the criteria that the United States will use in evaluating whether the Biden administration will grant Israel an exemption from the visa, the spokesman replied that the United States uses strong criteria when considering such an exemption for any country.
