Youth unemployment rate rises to 41%

The youth unemployment rate (15-29 years) in Palestine has risen to 41 percent over the past year, up from 30.5 percent in 2007.

In a press release on the occasion of World Youth Day Today, the Central Bureau of Statistics said that the unemployment rate for young people in the West Bank had risen from 25.6 percent in 2007 to 27.2 percent in 2017.

At a faster pace, the unemployment rate for youth in the Gaza Strip rose to 61.2 per cent in 2017, up from 39.8 per cent in 2007.

Among the graduates of the Intermediate Diploma campaign, the unemployment rate for young university graduates was 55.8 per cent.

The proportion of young people in society was approximately 28.2 per cent (1.37 million persons), which was equivalent to roughly one third of the population.

According to the data, 35.3 per cent of young people are enrolled in education, while the illiteracy rate declined from 1.1 per cent in 2007 to 0.6 per cent in Palestine, according to the 2017 census data.

According to the data of the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics, about one third of Palestinian youth are poor, at 29.2 per cent.
