The daily average per capita income in the Gaza Strip is $2--if any--the worst of the world, while the poverty rate has risen to about 85 percent, due to the tightening of the siege and the continued near-full closure of the Kerem Abu Salem crossing for the day 36 respectively, said MP Jamal al-Khudari, chairman of the People´s
According to a press release issued on Tuesday, about 62 percent of the youth unemployment rate among the young people is about 350, 000 workers permanently disabled due to the 12-year siege.
He stressed that hundreds of workers were joining the unemployment list on a daily basis as a result of the closure of factories and shops, for lack of access to goods and raw materials, as well as a real lack of employment opportunities.
Khodari warned of the catastrophic and complex situation in Gaza, in the face of a more serious economic reality as a result of the blockade, and the recent tightening of the embargo has made humanitarian realities more difficult.
"At the gates of Eid al-Adha and the start of the new school year, hundreds of trucks laden with goods worth $100 million, held by the Israeli occupation, continue to incur significant losses if they are not allowed to enter in time, as a season," said Al-Khudari.
Khodari reiterated that the Israeli occupation bears full responsibility for the blockade and the closure of commercial crossings and the consequent worsening human suffering.
"A genuine Arab, Islamic and international effort is required to end the siege as the most important pillar for saving what can be saved in Gaza," he said.
"What awaits the world more than we are in a tragic situation, and what they expect to see in Gaza, time is running out and urgent and immediate solutions are needed to lift the siege and establish vital projects for people´s employment," he said.
On the Palestinian side, Khodari said, "Everyone bears responsibility according to his position and responsibilities and must bear it, and does his due role to avert the dire situation in Gaza, improve the situation, and strive for a better and more than all these crises."
