UNRWA Gaza: US organization donates educational services to visually impaired children

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) has made a generous donation to some 500 Palestine refugee students with visual impairment at the Rehabilitation Center for the Visually Impaired in Gaza.

According to the UNRWA statement, the center provides rehabilitation services, education, eye examinations and academic integration programs for children aged 4-12 years with varying degrees of visual impairment. The center, the only one of its kind in the Gaza Strip, has been run by UNRWA for 55 years.

Mohammed Alwan, 7, says he loves his school and dreams of becoming a doctor one day. “It´s not easy to be a blind person. I want to learn, play, dream and enjoy my life equally with all the children in the world. Visually impaired people are the only place in Gaza that gives me access to education. ”

Like many children at the center, Alwan was born blind, and as a primary student at the center, he and his peers receive education and rehabilitation services tailored to the specific situation of each child. Despite the Agency´s ongoing financial deficit, UNRWA remains determined to assist more than 532,000 Palestine refugee girls and boys to reach their full development potential through its inclusive educational programs in 709 schools.

The intervention by Mercy will provide critical funding for specialist teachers, ophthalmologists and dozens of glasses. Moreover, funding from the US organization will help cover recreational activities designed to give these children a sense of normalcy despite the challenges they face.

Mercy is a humanitarian organization focused on alleviating human suffering and supporting individuals and their communities in their efforts to become self-sufficient.It was launched in 1988 from Michigan and supports dozens of health, nutrition and educational programs around the world. This is the second donation received by the Rehabilitation Center for the Visually Impaired.

For 70 years, UNRWA has been providing effective and reliable humanitarian support to Palestine refugees. The Agency´s services include free health care, free education, food and cash assistance and microcredit loans to a total of 5.5 million Palestine refugees in extreme hardship in Jordan, the Gaza Strip, Lebanon, Syria and the West Bank.
