The United Nations special Envoy for the Middle East peace process, Nikolai Mladenov, has called on all parties to do their part so that the lull in Gaza does not collapse.
In a press conference held on Monday in Gaza, Mladenov warned that any future confrontation would be "harsh."
He said: "Last weekend we were closest to a fourth war (..) We were tense and the situation was fragile."
"Everyone would have understood that any future confrontation could be imminent and could be harsh," the UN envoy hoped.
"There is no party who wants to bring war, because the war will bring destruction to the Israelis and the Palestinians," he said.
"I hope that all parties will fulfill their roles in order to ensure that the truce agreements do not collapse in the coming days," he added.
During the past months, the United Nations had been working to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinians and to bring about a breakthrough in the blockade of the Gaza Strip.
"We need the cooperation of all, the authorities, the Egyptians and the Israel, for Gaza and to improve the lives of the Palestinians to have hope for a better future," he said.
"Our goal is to lift the siege of Gaza, restore unity, and establish a Democratic national government that unites the West Bank and Gaza," he said.
"For the sake of continued peace and tranquility, we will continue to work with all sides to achieve and establish all projects," he said.
Mladenov said that Qatar´s help was "very important" to stabilize the situation and improve conditions for the energy industry. "We will focus on temporary employment opportunities in cooperation with the World Bank and the United Nations Development Program," he said.
"The United Nations will cooperate with all sides in energy and health, but the Palestinians need the unit to implement those projects," he said.
Mladenov´s remarks came on the sidelines of his visit to Nasser Medical complex in Khan Yunis in southern Gaza Strip and briefed him on the World Health Organization (WHO) solar energy project.
Mladenov arrived in Gaza City on Thursday morning through the "Beit Hanoun-Erez" crossing in the northern Gaza Strip, hours after Qatar´s Ambassador Mohammed al-Emadi, chairman of the Qatari Committee for the Reconstruction of Gaza, began distributing financial aid to poor families in the sector.
Egypt, the United Nations and Qatar are sponsoring a truce between the Palestinian resistance factions in Gaza and the occupation, which will lift the siege on Gaza in return for easing the return marches.
