"The situation in Gaza is tragic and does not bear any further hardship," said Bir Krähenbühl, Commissioner-General of the UN relief agency for UNRWA, on Wednesday.
"The level of poverty has risen, especially among the refugees, whose dependence on UNRWA has increased, requiring all assistance to prevent a new humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza," Krähenbühl said.
He briefed him at a meeting of the United Nations Security Council ,aired by Indonesia, to discuss developments in the Middle East, including the question of Palestine, during the monthly meeting on the region´s recent discussions. According to Wafa.
The recent events in Gaza have overshadowed the meeting, with most of the Council states calling on the parties concerned to uphold the cease-fire and refrain from any escalation that could lead to a worsening of the situation.
Krähenbühl called on the international community to make contributions to the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) urgently so that the international organization could operate more than 700 schools providing education services to half a million students from the camps in the region.
"Stopping the United States from providing assistance last year has brought us to great challenges and serious difficulties, but many countries have made pledges and provided a lifeline to millions of refugees, and this year we will hold a fundraising conference on 25 June, and we hope that generous countries can make their contributions, "he said.
