Ireland welcomes the decision to hold the Palestinian general elections

Irish Foreign Minister Simon Coveney welcomed President Mahmoud Abbas’s decision to hold the Palestinian general elections.

In a statement issued by him, Coffini praised the role of the International Quartet in reviving the peace process in the Middle East.

He affirmed his country´s position in support of the two-state solution on the basis of the 1967 borders, and support for any initiative that respects international law and relevant United Nations resolutions, and which sets rules for the aspirations of the Palestinian and Israeli peoples.

Coveney said that Ireland looks forward to working with the international community and international partners, especially through its presence on the Security Council.
